Root Canals

Root canals are one of the most common endodontic procedures. This treatment is used to treat inflamed, infected, and dead teeth. In addition to causing pain, dead and inflamed teeth can spread infection throughout your body and often appear grayish. This results in an unattractive appearance that can lead to decreased self-esteem and self-consciousness.

RCT (root canal treatment) is an invasive procedure that treats the pulp – The area in the center of the tooth that houses the nerve, blood vessels, and connective tissue. The root canal works by drilling a small hole into the tooth, removing the pulp, and then cleaning and filling with a substance called gutta-percha. Removal of the pulp eliminates pain and allows the tooth to be salvaged.

What can RCT help?  The process of root canal treatment can be used to treat a variety of dental problems.

Abscess

An abscess is an infection of the tooth, caused by a pus pocket formed along the pulp. Pus forms when bacteria decays. This can result in a foul odor, a bad taste, and excessive pain. It’s crucial to get an abscess treated because the infection can spread to other parts of your body.

Deep Cavity

Deep cavities form from decay that’s been allowed to progress beyond the beginning stages. These deep cavities are incredibly painful and leave gaping holes that allow for food particles to enter and sit, thus continuing the cycle of decay.

Pain

Whether your pain is unexplained or the result of some sort of trauma or infection, removal of the pulp and nerve will completely eliminate it and result in less pain.

Why is RCT necessary?

A root canal is necessary when there’s been trauma to a tooth that results in damage to the nerve or severing of it. Root canals also can be a part of a treatment plan if you have a broken tooth or if root resorption is something that’s afflicted you.
